Hugh opened his first studio in Newquay, Cornwall in the early 1970’s, progressing later to a larger production pottery in Devon. Between 1981-1985 he lived and worked in La Borne in central France. This is a unique area, where traditional forms and ways of making pottery, using wood fired kilns survive from ancient times. For the next fifteen years he once again worked in Cornwall and then moved back to La borne in 2000. He uses clay from the local area and from the Westerwald region of Germany.
